Conditions That Can Be Treated with CyberKnife

The CyberKnife® can be used to treat benign and cancerous tumors virtually anywhere in the body, without requiring surgery. This alone is a tremendous advantage. The ability to deliver high doses of radiation to tumors with extreme accuracy, without risk of tissue damage anywhere else, enables us to use the CyberKnife to offer new solutions to patients with inoperable or surgically-complex tumors or who want treatment without surgery.

Cancer Treatments with CyberKnife

CyberKnife is now being used to treat a wide range of cancers. It is a viable, non-invasive alternative to surgery that can eradicate tumors anywhere in the body with pinpoint accuracy, without endangering surrounding healthy tissue or other nearby critical structures, such as the spinal cord or the optic nerve.

Why is CyberKnife Better?

  • It is more accurate, allowing treatment with minimal harm to surrounding tissue. CyberKnife delivers high doses of radiation with sub-millimeter accuracy.
  • It is more flexible, offering maneuverability and versatility that is unsurpassed by traditional radiation systems. There is no limit to the different positions from which treatment can be delivered, which means that the CyberKnife System can treat tumors anywhere in the body, from any angle. This includes tumors in the brain, spine, lung, liver, pancreas and prostate.
  • It utilizes robotic tracking devices, which immediately detect and adjust for any movement by the tumor or by the patient. The fact that there is no need to interrupt treatment for continual manual repositioning of the patient makes this procedure faster and more efficient.
  • It is pain free, since treatment with CyberKnife is completely non-invasive. This makes the treatment appropriate for patients whose tumors would otherwise have been considered inoperable, for surgically-complex tumors, and/or for patients who are not good candidates for surgery.

Non-Cancerous Condition Treatment with CyberKnife

The CyberKnife system offers options for non-invasive treatment for tumors anywhere in the body. The advantages include image-guided technology and flexibility of three-dimensional movement. Among the non-cancerous conditions CyberKnife has been used to treat are:

  • Benign tumors: Meningiomas, acoustic neuromas, schwannomas, pituitary adenomas, hemangioblastomas and craniopharyngiomas
  • Vascular malformations: Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), cavernous malformations
  • Functional disorders such as Trigeminal neuralgia
