Cancers That Can Be Treated with CyberKnife at Stamford Hospital

Prostate Cancer
Treatment Plan.
The CyberKnife® System uses high doses of radiation to treat tumors anywhere in the body, even those previously considered inoperable. These can include tumors and lesions in the brain, spine, lungs, liver, pancreas, kidney, and prostate. Radiosurgical treatment with CyberKnife has been proven effective and pain-free. It is an alternative to surgery that offers new hope and an improved quality of life.
Prostate Cancer
Early stage prostate cancer can be treated with CyberKnife. CyberKnife can also be used as a boost following conventional radiation therapy. Patients undergoing CyberKnife treatment report significantly improved recovery and quality of life during treatment over other more conventional therapies.
Brain Cancer
Radiotherapy and radiosurgery have been used for several decades to expand the brain cancer treatment arsenal beyond surgery and chemotherapy. The advantages of using CyberKnife include the ability to deliver localized, focused radiation treatment after surgery, without any of the complications or discomfort of conventional radiotherapy methods.
The safety and efficacy of the CyberKnife System for the treatment of metastatic intracranial lesions is well established. Published reports indicate high rates of tumor control along with low complication rates for patients with intracranial tumors.
Spinal Cancer
The latest treatment approach for spinal cancer involves using highly accurate radiosurgery for lesions anywhere in the spine. This is an improvement upon the previous preferred spinal cancer treatment, which involved surgery (surgical resection of the spinal tumor) and external beam radiotherapy. Recent published reports show the following advantages: high rates of tumor control, significant, rapid, and durable pain relief; maintenance or improvement in mental and physical quality of life, and low rates of complications, comparable to intracranial radiosurgery treatments.
Lung Cancer
For lung cancer patients, CyberKnife offers the unique and significant improvement of its Synchrony Respiratory Tracking System, which automatically tracks and compensates for tumor movement during treatment delivery. Recent studies show promising results.
Other Cancers That Can Be Treated with CyberKnife:
Physicians are exploring and expanding ways to use CyberKnife to treat other cancers, including pancreatic, liver and kidney cancer.
